Fanciful Review | A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers

A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a child of books.
I come from a world of stories.

In this book, we get to follow along on the adventure the Children of Books take. This adventure is primarily told through pictures, given that it is a picture book. However, you will encounter more words than you might expect as well, as much of the art is comprised of text from children’s classics.

This unique art is what drew me into the book after the title captured my attention. It truly stands out and expresses a great deal. I especially love the way colour evolves on the pages as the two characters progress through their adventure.

There is much here for children and adults to enjoy. It perfectly demonstrates to children what reading can feel like, and through this, it may be possible to convince children hesitant about reading to try the activity. The two characters share the stories together, showing kids that reading doesn’t have to be a solitary experience.

For adults it is also capable of magic, for we often forget. We forget to take time to indulge in fantasy. We forget to explore our imagination. We forget to dream of broader horizons. This book is a reminder to us of the joys of reading, of how much bigger and more beautiful the world is with a book in our hands.

I truly loved A Child of Books and the emotions and excitement it stoked within me as I read it. I believe this book is perfect for all the other Children of Books, children and adults alike.
